Brant Homestead

What started as an unused corner of the garage, several bales of straw, and mostly found or rummaged materials, became our first chicken coop. We never even used that door in the back, so it made for an effective chicken door out to their run.

After some stress testing, our quality assurance manager signed off on the program.

After several bales of straw, some wood shavings, and a handful of chickens, our egg program was off to a great start.

After a few days, I watched them hunt and eat a wasp, but it took almost a week for these brave souls to finally venture outside.

Our first Rooster as a young cockerel, probably looking for something to snack on.

TIme to expand…

We converted an old dresser to add some more nesting boxes and after a thorough inspection the flock approved.

We converted an old cat perch into an old chicken perch.

Time to add some quail!

Quail are bred for cage life…

…but I quickly got carried away.

Time for another expansion: A brooding area for our new chickens and turkeys!

The run needed some work too.

They grow up so fast.

Then we took in some baby ducks that’d been hatched by a local elementary school.

They absolutely loved the swimming pool upgrade.

But we built them a duck house…

…so they could enjoy their final destination.

Time to add a LOT more chickens. These little broilers are mostly destined for a Labor Day celebration at a local church, but there should be enough left over for freezer camp afterwards.

But these little broilers will be the start of our broiler breeding program.

We’re halfway through the 2024 season now, so the second half of the year will be in preparation for next year. The game plan for next year is to add goats and a catfish program. Until then, we’re hoping that you’re keeping half as cool as these turkeys, who look like they’re about to drop the hottest album of the year.
